Comments: This is a popular cactus which will grow quite large where conditions are favorable. The leaves are large, oblong pads which normally bear few spines. The fruit is edible when it ripens to a purple color. Old pads eventually form woody stems. Very drought tolerant. Excellent for rock gardens and other xeriscape plantings. Pads begin to shrivel during droughts indicating the need for water. Easy to grow. New plants formed from a single pad used as a cutting.
