This is a tropical tree associated with rain forest and moist areas in drier landscapes of Central and South America. It produces palmately compound leaves with five to eight leaflets. Large, bell-shaped flowers are quite pungent and attract bats, hummingbirds, bees and wasps. Large seed pods contain many hard seeds.
