The calyxes around the base of the flowers are almost black. For salvias provide full sunlight and a well drained soil. Deadhead flowers as they die to encourage new growth and flowering. Fertilize salvias several times during the growing season to encourage continuous growth. Salvias are relatively easy to grow, but cannot tolerate wet soils and shade.
