Comments: This is a relatively new introduction of the gardenia. Like all gardenias, pests can be quite troublesome. These include thrips in the flowers turning them brown, and aphids, whit fly and scale insects on the foliage. If these insects are present the foliage is often covered with a sooty mold. Pests can be treated successfully and seem to be worse on plants growing under stressful conditions. Gardenias make a nice moderately low privacy hedge and also are especially nice in the shrub border growing as specimen plants. This is a single flowering gardenia. It is reported to be more cold hardy than the regular gardenias. There is no fragrance quite like the sweet fragrance of the gardenia flower.
