Attarctive to butterflies. It has sharp spines and caution should be used when working with it. Aphids, snails, slugs, and caterpillars are insect pests. A relatively recent introduction, bougainvillea looper, is now a significant pest in California. Keep soil moderately dry and feed sparingly.
