Comments: Leaves purplish-red during much of the growing season. Reportedly becomes dark green in areas with hot summers and for this reason it is not adapted to use in the deep south. Bark peels excessively revealing inner bark that is browning. This successive peeling is said to give the plant nine layers and thus its name. Used as shrub border, group or mass planting.
