A small white flower in summer is followed by a green pea-like fruit which is encased with a papery cover which turns orange-red as the fruit inside ripens. Chinese lantern is a fast growing, aggressive plant and should not be used in borders where it can take over an area quickly. It can be grown in a tub or large container where it can not spread.
